Why Your Google Business Profile Gets Views But No Calls

Thousands of views on your Google Business Profile but the phone isn't ringing? Here are the real reasons — and exactly how to fix them.

You check your Google Business Profile insights. Hundreds of views this month. People are finding you.

But the phone isn't ringing.

This is one of the most common frustrations we hear from small business owners. Views are vanity. Calls are revenue. If you're getting one without the other, something specific is broken — and it's almost always fixable.

Here are the seven most common reasons your GBP gets views but no calls.

If you'd rather have someone audit your full digital presence, see what we cover →

1. Your Photos Are Old, Dark, or Missing

Your photos are the first thing a potential customer sees before they decide whether to call. A profile with no photos — or photos from five years ago — signals neglect.

Google's own data shows that businesses with photos receive 42% more requests for directions and 35% more click-throughs than those without.

Fix: Add at least 10 recent, well-lit photos. Include your storefront, interior, team, products, and work examples. Update them every 90 days. Use a smartphone — you don't need a photographer.

2. You Have Few or No Reviews (Or Unresponded Ones)

Most people read reviews before calling a business. If you have fewer than 10 reviews, you're invisible against competitors with 50+. If you have negative reviews you haven't responded to, you're actively losing calls.

Fix: Ask every satisfied customer to leave a review. Make it easy — send them the direct review link via SMS or email. Respond to every review, positive or negative, within 48 hours. A professional response to a 1-star review builds more trust than ignoring it.

3. Your Business Category Is Wrong

Google uses your primary category to decide when to show your listing. If you're a plumber listed as "Home Services" instead of "Plumber", you're missing the searches that matter.

Fix: Go to your GBP dashboard → Edit Profile → Business category. Be as specific as possible. Add secondary categories for every relevant service. Check what category your top-ranking local competitors are using.

4. Your Phone Number or Hours Are Incorrect

This sounds obvious, but it's surprisingly common. A wrong phone number means every person who tries to call gets a dead line or the wrong business. Incorrect hours mean customers who try to call outside your listed hours give up — even if you're actually open.

Fix: Call your own listing right now. Confirm the number rings correctly. Double-check your hours, including public holidays. Enable the "chat" option if you want to capture leads outside business hours.

5. Your Profile Has No Posts or Recent Activity

Google rewards active profiles. A profile with no posts from the last 90 days looks abandoned — both to Google's algorithm and to potential customers.

Fix: Post at least once per week. It doesn't need to be long. A completed job photo with two sentences, a new service announcement, a seasonal offer. Consistent activity signals that your business is real and operating.

6. You're Not Showing Up for the Right Searches

Views don't mean you're appearing in front of the right people. You could be getting views from people searching for something adjacent to what you do — but not from people with buying intent.

Fix: Check your "Search queries" in GBP Insights. Are the keywords relevant to what you actually sell? If not, update your business description to include your core services and location. Add services in the Services section. Use your posts to naturally include local keywords.

7. Your Listing Isn't Optimised for Conversions

Getting someone to your profile is step one. Getting them to call is step two. Most profiles fail at step two because there's no clear reason to act.

Fix: Write a business description that addresses a specific pain point and ends with a clear action ("Call us for a free quote"). Add a booking link if you use scheduling software. Use the Q&A section — add your own questions and answers about pricing, availability, and what makes you different.

The 5-Minute Audit Checklist

Run through this right now:

  • [ ] At least 10 recent photos uploaded
  • [ ] 10+ reviews with responses on all of them
  • [ ] Primary category is the most specific option available
  • [ ] Phone number verified by calling it yourself
  • [ ] Hours correct including holidays
  • [ ] At least one post in the last 30 days
  • [ ] Business description mentions your main service + suburb/city
  • [ ] Services section fully completed
  • [ ] Q&A section populated

If you ticked fewer than 6 of those, your profile is leaving calls on the table.

When to Get Help

Google Business Profile optimisation is one of the highest-ROI things a local business can do — and most of it is free. But getting it right, especially when you're competing against established local businesses, requires knowing which signals Google weights most heavily.

If you've fixed the basics and still aren't seeing results, the issue is usually one of three things: your website doesn't support your GBP (slow, no local SEO), you're in a highly competitive category, or your overall domain authority is too low.

That's where a proper local SEO strategy comes in. Our SEO and local search services are built specifically to solve this.
